Keeping your entire family safe from electricity means your pets too!
Electrical wires are a real threat to animals.
The most common threat to animals in your home are from cords that they may chew on or cords they may trip on causing heavy items to fall on them. Cats love to play with cords and puppies love to chew on cords so dealing with the temptation is an important safety precaution we should all take. Tucking cords away or covering them up with trim is a good idea. You may also organize your cords neatly into cord looms which should also help. For those cords you cannot tuck away you can try wiping with a solution that will be very unapealing to your pets.
Warm places to sleep
Dogs and cats like to curl up on anything warm. On top of the dryer, behind the TV, on your computer, or even on a on top of electrical connections like power bars etc. Train your pets not to lay on these areas or if they cannot resist the temptation you may need to block off areas you think are highest risk.
Electrical sockets
Whatever you are plugging in to your plug make sure it is in all the way and no part of the prongs are exposed. The exposed prongs if touched by your animal will electrocute them. Your pets collar or leash may also come into contact with the prongs which will also shock them.
Space heaters or other heavy appliances can be a hazard.
Space heaters are a risk not only for burns or shocks, they may also be knocked over when your pets are playing. If they are knocked over there is a risk of fire and also a risk of falling on your pet and injuring it. Keep space heaters out of the main areas your pets love to travel when they are ripping around the house.
